We have seen the emergence of the well- dressed man again. Tailored clothing has gone mainstream with slim fit suits and clothing. The young guy who used to wear boot cut, over faded jeans with a graphic tee and flip flops as his daily uniform has made the switch over to slim cut, dark indigo denim with a trim shirt and trim tie or cardigan and some nice brogues, boat shoes or vans. This movement is also finding its way into formalwear. Parties are more prone to be "black tie", weddings are more formal and guys tend to WANT to dress up more in general.
More Than Ever, It's About Fit
The trend in men's suiting revolves around the classics, but more specifically, modern takes on the classics. A good suit for this decade will take on the best elements from the peak eras of men's suiting (think the formality of the Victorian era, the savoir faire of the 1930s and the skinny detailing of the 1960s) and apply them to a modern silhouette which can range from the slim fit suit to a slightly more relaxed tailored fit.
From The Top Down
It doesn’t matter what the price tag says if a tuxedo or suit doesn’t fit properly. A good suit should lie nicely on the shoulders, not hang off. When you put on the jacket, there should be a firmness to it, which carries down to the waist and contour to your body. One of our men’s style consultants at Elegant Penguin can help you pick a style that will give you the perfect fit and perfect look.
Show Some Cuff
Your jacket sleeves should end just before the break in the wrist so that a ¼ to ½ inch of shirt cuff will show. A nice set of cufflinks will be the finishing touch to a great look.
Who Wears the Pants
A flat front, slim fit pant with very little break is the way to go. It will coordinate with a tailored jacket and make that slim fit suit or tuxedo look like it was made just for you. The pant should lie on top of the shoe, not bunch up at the ankle (bunching will make the suit look sloppy and you will wear out the bottoms of the pant). When the pants lay right it should be a long clean look.
Tie Me Up and Sock It To Me
The accessories you choose can really add some flair and show your personality. Narrow in the tie is the way to go but don’t be afraid to show some color or pattern. Not sure how to coordinate it or how to tie a bowtie properly? Again our men’s style consultants at Elegant Penguin will be happy to do that for you and suggest ways to make your accessories pop. Don’t forget the socks – color and pattern is where its at and it’s a great way to have the groomsmen match the wedding colors without overdoing it.
